Common Fire Hazards to Watch For

Unattended Cooking

Many home fires can be prevented by recognizing everyday hazards and taking simple precautions. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of kitchen fires, so stay near the stove when frying, grilling, or broiling, and keep towels, packaging, and other combustible items away from burners.

Electrical Overloads and Faulty Wiring

Electrical overloads and faulty wires can overheat and ignite; avoid plugging too many high-demand devices into one outlet or extension cord, replace damaged cords, and have flickering lights, warm outlets, or frequently tripped breakers inspected by a qualified electrician.

Drier Lint Build Up

Dryer lint buildup restricts airflow and can become highly flammable, so clean the lint screen after every load and periodically clean the dryer vent and ductwork.

Space Heaters

Space heaters should be placed on a stable, nonflammable surface at least three feet from bedding, curtains, furniture, and clothing, and should be turned off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Candles

Never leave candles unattended; keep them away from children, pets, drafts, and anything that can burn, or consider flameless alternatives.

Flammable Liquids

Flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint thinners, and solvents must be stored in approved, tightly sealed containers away from heat sources, sparks, and open flames. Keeping smoke alarms working, maintaining clear exits, and following these safety practices can greatly reduce the risk of a devastating fire.
